When Your Cost Data Can Answer Back: Conversational FinOps Comes to Snowflake

A Snowflake-native accelerator that answers cost questions to manage your credit consumption

The FinOps Problem Has Changed

According to the State of FinOps report, 98% of practitioners now manage AI spend, up from 31% two years earlier. The FinOps Foundation has updated its mission from the value of cloud to the value of technology, and Snowflake became the first cloud data and AI platform to join as a Premier Member.

The hard part is what comes next. Warehouse compute drives 60–80% of most Snowflake bills with waste hiding in idle time and over-provisioned clusters. Cortex AI adds token-based billing where a single query can cost $5,000. Snowflake has native telemetry, FOCUS alignment, and budgets, but turning all that into a fast answer still takes SQL and time. With Cortex Analyst, Cortex Search, and Cortex Agents, Snowflake now has the pieces to close that gap natively. As the FinOps Foundation’s CTO put it, FinOps for AI is just FinOps. So we built an agent that applies that principle.

Introducing the FinOps Cortex Agent

The FinOps Cortex Agent is a TechStar accelerator: a conversational cost intelligence layer built entirely inside Snowflake. No external tools. No data leaving your account. No separate platform to stand up or license.

A platform owner or FinOps lead asks a question in plain English and gets a structured, actionable answer: which warehouses to resize and what the savings would be, why a cost spike happened and who drove it, how to reduce spend on a specific feature backed by official Snowflake documentation, or a full cross-domain cost overview with dollar values, prioritized optimizations, and risk flags. The agent doesn’t guess. It generates executable SQL grounded in your actual usage data.

Under the hood, it runs on three layers. The data foundation pre-joins and cleans Snowflake’s native usage data across five cost domains before the AI ever touches it, which is what makes the output trustworthy rather than approximate. Above that, Cortex Analyst semantic views make the data AI-queryable alongside documentation and pricing references via Cortex Search. An orchestrator sits on top, routing each question to the right tool and assembling the response. The whole thing runs inside Snowflake and inherits your existing access controls.

Why Native Matters

This is worth being direct about. There are third-party Snowflake cost tools on the market. Some of them are good. But they all require your cost data to leave Snowflake, introduce a new platform to secure and maintain, and add a license you don’t need if the capability already exists natively.

The FinOps Cortex Agent runs entirely within Snowflake. Cost data never leaves your account. As Snowflake describes its own conversational AI approach, it is built to maintain Snowflake’s security and governance framework throughout. This accelerator is built the same way. For most enterprise security and compliance teams, that distinction matters quite a bit.

What You Get

The FinOps Cortex Agent is a complete cost intelligence platform, not a proof of concept.

It delivers conversational cost Q&A across five domains: warehouse efficiency, query performance, serverless compute, Cortex AI cost, and storage lifecycle. The optimization advisor doesn’t just flag problems; it quantifies the savings and tells you exactly what to change. On-demand reporting synthesizes structured cost summaries with dollar values, risk flags, and action items on request. Documentation and pricing lookup draws from official Snowflake sources, so rates and recommendations are accurate rather than inferred.

Beyond the conversational layer, automated environment assessments baseline your configuration and utilization without manual effort. Gap analysis and benchmarking surface deviations from best practices. Anomaly monitoring runs on a schedule and flags cost spikes before they become surprises. Agent-initiated actions take it a step further, moving from recommendation to resolution. And a visual FinOps dashboard provides trend views and cost summaries across the platform.

This doesn’t solve everything. Governance, culture, and organizational alignment are still your problem. But if the bottleneck is getting fast, accurate answers about where your Snowflake money is going, this removes it.
